What’s New In Theatres? Feb. 5 2010

Thank Goodness it’s Friday.  The weekend cometh, and so does a new batch of movies at your local theatre.  Now we all know that not every weekend is a good weekend at the movies in terms of what’s coming out.  I am here to forecast the weekend, and share whether or not I feel a trip to the theatre is necessary.

Wide Release:

Dear John

Yay!  Another movie based from a Nicholas Sparks’ novel.  I am not a fan of any of these movies.  The Notebook was tolerable, but I guessed the end of the film within the first ten minutes of the movie.  This movie would be an excellent choice to see with a date, but with only a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems this is not going to be any better than any of his previous movies.  But if you are interested, the movie is about two young people falling in love and the obstacles they have to overcome to be with each other…just like all his other movies.  I am betting that someone dies in the film, and it will be blatantly obvious that these two people love each other, but will not be able to be together in the end.

Final Word:  Go see it with a date, or if you’re a pansy man who enjoys having a good cry or two.

From Paris With Love

Starring John Travolta and Johnathan Rhys Meyers as special agent partners to stop a terrorist attack in Paris, From Paris With Love seems to take a Rush Hour type formula, by pairing two unlike characters as partners and having them struggle to save the day.  I have a little hope for this film because Pierre Morel is the director.  Taken for me was like an extended episode of 24, the hit show currently in it’s eighth season on Fox, and I love that show.  Taken was an hour and a half of non-stop adrenaline and it had me entertained the entire time.  From Paris With Love has a runtime of an hour and 35 minutes, so maybe it could be this year’s Taken, but judging from the trailer I highly doubt it.

Final Word:  Pass and rent it when it comes out on DVD.

Limited Release:

Frozen

Featured in our 2010 Horror Movie Preview, Frozen is opening in limited release this weekend.  Frozen is one of those horrific situation movies, like Saw and the recent Paranormal Activity, and is bound to draw people to the theatre once it is available in wide release.  I am not a big fan of these types of movies, mainly because I’m a pansy ass, but this movie has me intrigued.  Three people stuck on a ski lift with basically no options but to freeze to death, Frozen is one of those movies that gets you to think about what you would do if put in that same situation.  I may only see it in theaters if the word of mouth is good, if not, it will definitely earn a rent.

Final Word:  If  you are intrigued, and it is showing somewhere near you, go see it.

District 13: Ultimatum

I must admit that I know nothing about this film.  I didn’t even know that it was a sequel until just a couple of days ago.  I saw the advertisements on TV and thought it looked kind of stupid.  According to Rotten Tomatoes, this movie along with it’s predecessor are actually respectable, and fans of martial arts films should definitely give this one a chance.

Final Word: Go find the original, District B13, and if you like it, go see the sequel.

Weekend Forecast: Not a strong weekend for the theatre in terms of quality movies..  If you are into predictable tear-jerkers or a bald John Travolta, then this is your weekend, if not, go see Avatar again.
