When it comes to enjoying a great movie night with some friends, nothing beats kicking back and watching one of the great American classics.

The smell of the popcorn only adds to the desire to sit back and get lost in the thrills of a new adventure a great movie provides. For the longest time, movies use to simply be black and white and pretty much simple. But these days, movies have begun breaking molds thanks to new technologies.

But what exactly is considered a classic? Without a doubt, there have been hundreds of great movies throughout the years, all of which had their own unique qualities which helped them stand out.

Perhaps some of the greatest American classics were those films which broke the mold. Throughout the course of movie history, there are certain movies which boldly went where no other movies went before. Each of these films provided movie goers with things they had never seen before.

Here are the top 10 most innovative movies of all time:

1. Citizen Kane
2. Pulp Fiction
3. 2001: Space Odyssey
4. Star Wars
5. Blair Witch Project
6. The Matrix
7. Inception
8. Toy Story
9. Terminator 2
10. Titantic

With the recent surge of technology in moving making there is no doubt that movies have changed and really been taken to another level. From advances in computer graphics to storylines that are nothing short of remarkable movies have had a major overhaul over the past 10 years. Here are the 10 most innovative films since the year 2000.

10 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
When it comes to creativity this movie stands alone and many films since then have tried to duplicate its unique and creative way of telling a story.

9 Moulin Rouge
There have been many attempts before this movie to create a musical that could stand up to Hollywood’s new standards and all had failed until Moulin Rouge turned the musical world on its head.

8 A Scanner Darkly
Animation has been around for quite some time, but none of it was quite like this. A true animated move for adults that looks more like a complicated real life movie then an animated film.

7 Kill Bill
Quentin Taranteno had been know for his violent and shocking style of movies, but both volume 1 and 2 turned grind house cinema into an action packed fun movie.

6 Wall-E
Disney has been known for its innovation in movie making and Wall-E was no exception. The script of Wall-E had almost no words, but left you amazed and interested through-out the entire move.

5 Avatar
Avatar has given movie makers a new goal and that is to create a movie that can handle taking mind blowing computer graphics and combining it with a storyline that is a pleasure to be apart of.

4 No Country For Old Men
This is a dark and almost slow moving movie, but for some reason the unique plot keeps you watching with amazing interest.

3 Memento
When it comes to storytelling this is one of the most innovative films of all time. Filled with black and white vignettes, this movie is reversed to give you a unique perspective on the story.

2 Lord of the Rings
This spectacular movie epic gave us a combination of everything new movies need to be successful. Fantastic characters, stunning special effects, and an experience you will never forget.

1. Harry Potter
These magical movies brought us the life of a wonderful wizard for most of his childhood and up through his young adult life. Never before has the movie industry seen so many successful movies and done in such a fun and exciting way.

When did going out to the movies get so darn expensive? If you’re like us, a night in with some wine and your direct tv packages sounds just as good as fighting the masses at the theater – here are a few recently released films that make for a great movie night at home:
30 Minutes or Less: If you’re in the mood for a comedy, this is the one. It didn’t last long at theaters but it’s fascinatingly goofy and the characters are relatable while the plot’s just plain ridiculous.
Super 8: This film’s been heralded as why people like movies and we get that. It’s got the Speilberg touch as well as some killer special effects and it’s safe for your kids over 10, too. Family movie night!
Horrible Bosses: If you didn’t see this one in theaters you’ve got to catch it now – Horrible Bosses is the funniest comedy of the year. Watch it with your wife or your boyfriend but whatever you do, don’t let the kids in the room if Jennifer Aniston’s onscreen. Trust us.

The very first films, made in the late 19th century, were shorts. At first they were viewed through peephole machines in arcades. Only one person at a time could use the peepholes. Later, these shorts were shown in vaudeville halls, then in theaters called nickelodeons. Nickelodeons sat around one hundred people and presented films of about fifteen minutes to an hour long. A live piano player would provide the music.

One of the most famous short films was the Lumiere brothers’ Arrival of a Train at a Station, made in 1895, which describes the action perfectly. The audience, unused to the idea of film, thought an actual train was barreling into the theater and some of them fled in terror. The Lumieres called these short films actualits, which were film shorts about real life events.

Thomas Edison’s film company also produced these short films, including Fred Otts’ Sneeze from 1891 and The Kiss from 1896. The short films became even more sophisticated after the turn of the 20th century, when Edwin S. Porter was hired for the Edison Company and made two famous shorts, The Life of An American Fireman and The Great Train Robbery. These were important films because they offered examples of the new technique of crosscutting, and the close up.

Movies are a way for people to escape from their lives for a few hours. They provide entertainment, fun, and sometimes eye-opening experiences to the viewers. Everyone has a favorite movie or a handful of movies that they love to watch and most people know the names of some of the most successful movies ever made.

However, there are a number of famous films that almost never happened. Some of these films include the Oscar nominated movie ‘The Fighter’ starring Christian Bale and Mark Walhberg, ‘Apocalypse Now’ directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and James Cameron’s ‘Avatar,’ the record holder for the number 1 box office revenue in the world.

These are all great movies that should be watched on, and appreciated even more, movie night. ‘The Fighter’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’ almost never happened because the movie studios didn’t want to invest money into making these two films because they thought the subject matter wouldn’t be popular in mainstream society. ‘Avatar’ almost never happened because James Cameron didn’t think that the technology would be up to the point that he wanted to engage the audience in the way that he wanted.

However, all three of these movies were successful and are beautiful pieces of art that every movie watcher should enjoy.

One of the best old Hollywood classics most likely to be missed is probably Preston Sturges’ “Sullivan’s Travels” (1941.) This old film starred Joel McCrea, who was, unfortunately, not seen in more popular or profitable films of the time. McCrea played a film director named Sullivan who made many mindless, yet profitable comedies.

While his studio urges him to continue, Sullivan wishes to become socially aware and live as a homeless man and make a documentary about it. As he does this, he meets a woman, played by Veronica Lake, who came to Hollywood to be an actress. Sullivan lives with the homeless hobos and eats in soup kitchens and gathers the information he wants to assemble his documentary. He then starts handing out to the people he met, five dollar bills. Then one over zealous and greedy man overtakes Sullivan, knocking him unconscious and stealing his belongings.

Sullivan wakes up in a train yard, unaware of who he is and is wrongly arrested for robbery. He spends time in jail and as his memory returns and slowly convinces the authorities he is a famous director, he learns a valuable lesson. The prisoners so enjoy watching the movie comedies shown.

An Indy film that should have made it big was Being John Malkovich. This Indy film was written by the legendary Charlie Kaufman. It follows the interesting life of actor John Malkovich. This movie captured the hearts of its viewers due to a very unorthodox style. The plot was so confusing that it instantly becomes intriguing. You are curious as to what you are watching and what is real and what isn’t.

Being John Malkovich was a work of art, the lighting, the dialogue, and the acting coalesced to produce one of the finest films ever made. The whole story can be found at http://okinawaassault.wordpress.com/2011/08/03/ladies-and-gentlemen-miss/ The film is known for the line, “You are what you love, not what loves you.”

This Indy film amazes audiences and should have made it big. The fact that Indy films have smaller budgets than films backed by a major motion picture studio makes it hard for them to compete. The movie relies solely on word of mouth to some extent and this hurts it with the general public.

Being John Malkovich was an amazing movie. Charlie Kaufman wrote an amazing script as usual and it left the audiences wanting more. John Malkovich acted amazingly and this contributed to a great Indy film.
